Big 5 Explorer: Option 2
4 Night/ 5 Day Mbotyi to Port Edward Mountain Bike Tour
Transfer from Port Edward to Mbotyi Community Rondavels / Mbotyi River Lodge
The transfer is an adventure on its own! The drive will take you on a scenic adventure from Port Edward to Mbotyi, which includes meandering your way through Magwa Tea estate and being able to view three stunning waterfalls along the way – Alice Falls, Fraser Falls and Magwa Falls.
Hike from Mbotyi to Luphuthana (+- 16km / 4,5hrs)
Today can either be tackled on your mountain bike or by foot, however the latter is recommended as the terrain proves difficult in places. The scenery along this stretch is the most dramatic and thus possibly the most spectacular stretch of the coast line and tackling it on foot will allow you to take in the awe-inspiring views.
Two of the 3 most ionic landmarks along this coastline will be experienced on today’s hike – Cathedral Rock, a 50m high rock formation towering out of the sea and Waterfall Bluff, a 90m high waterfall that plunges directly into the Indian Ocean.
Accommodation for the night is a private cottage just a stones throw from the beach at Luphuthana (alternatively we can bunk at the Luphuthana Drifters Camp if more accommodation is required).
Ride from Luphuthana to Msikaba (+-20km / 3,5hrs)
The route is a series of single track, cattle paths, some jeep tracks and a few short distances of beach pedaling where we cross the beach Goss Point and Port Governor. We will be riding close to the sea along this stretch and will have amazing scenery throughout the course of today’s ride.
Our destination point to end off Day 3 is Vonnie’s Rest, Msikaba. Vonnie’s Rest is positioned in an idyllic setting in a beautiful valley with a small clear river running at the edge of the property.
The Vulture Colony can be included in today’s ride with a couple of extra kilometres or alternatively we can take a drive up to the viewing deck for a few sun downers in the evening.
Tonight we will have traditionally cooked pizza from our clay oven with some delicious camp desserts to end off the meal.
Ride from Msikaba to Mtentu River Lodge (+- 25km / 3.5hrs)
We depart from Msikaba and ride along the coastline through Mkamabti nature reserve, crossing two rivers at each flank of the reserve, either by foot or ferry.
The reserve is made up of coastal bush, grass lands and lush swamp forests hosting a wide variety of birds, mammals and other animals – Zebra, Wildebeest, various species of antelope & baboons. We stop at several of the water falls as we ride though this park following game trails and jeep tracks.
Arrival at Mtentu River Lodge will be around mid day, just in time to enjoy a delicious lunch hosted in their boma dining area. Spend the afternoon relaxing at the accommodation, taking a paddle up the river or for the more adventurous there is a strenuous hike to a magnificent waterfall at the top of one of the gorges – well worth the effort if you are up for it.
Ride from Mtentu River Lodge to Wild Coast Casino (+-25km / 3hrs)
Today is all about timing the ride with the low tide as we will be hitting the beach soon after our departure from Mtentu.
The ride along the beach is a special way to finish off the adventure – 20km of deserted beaches with only the tracks of the bikes in front of you imprinted in the sand.
It is worth taking some time to stop and take some pictures of the red desert or some of the pristine little estuaries along the route.
We expect to arrive at Wild Coast Casino around midday, where we can either head across to the Old Pont resort for a shower and meal or if you prefer to get home you can finish off your day at the casino.

Day Off at Vonnie’s Rest can be added to either tour and is well worth taking the extra day.
This will be a day for you to choose your own adventure or a chance to just relax.
