3Night/ 4Day Port Edward to Mbotyi & Back MTB Tour
Ride from Wild Coast Casino_Port Edward to Msikaba (Inland Route) (55km)
Starting at Wild Coast Casino we head across the Mzamba River over the suspension bridge which welcomes us in to the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape.
We head along an extensive network of cattle trails and walking paths to connect the routes around the many gorges of the area. Our first stop of the day will be at Nyameni Falls – a beautiful waterfall in the recesses of the surrounding cliffs.
We make our way to Mtentu River where we will transverse into Mkambati Reserve where you can be lucky enough to see numerous wildlife on land or in the oceans off shore. Negotiating some game trails takes us to Horseshoe falls for a final break before crossing the Southern river flank of Mkamati – the magnificent Msikaba River.
You are now on the home stretch to Vonnies Rest, where you will get to relax and enjoy the afternoon and evening with refreshing drinks, a great meal and beautiful scenery.
Msikaba to Mbotyi (+-60km – Inland Route)
Today will be slightly easier as we head along the gravel road out of Msikaba which will give some respite allowing you to put some distance behind you at a faster pace. We will still make time to stop at the landmarks, the first stop being the Vulture Colony deck where you will get to view one of the largest breeding populations in one of the most fantastic locations.
We make our way back to the main road and head into the Magwa Tea Plantation where we wind our way through the labyrinth of mazes of tea plants and then proceed on to view three very special waterfalls – Alice Falls, Fraser Falls & Magwa Falls. The latter is a spectacular waterfall that plunges over 140m to the ravine below and is with out a doubt one of the best Natural Wonders of the Eastern Cape and South Africa.
Our last descent through the Indigenous coastal forest is some white knuckle stuff with a 5km down hill ride through the forest via a steep concrete road.
The choice of accommodation is Mbotyi River Lodge or Mbotyi Community Camp Rondavels.
Mbotyi to Msikaba (35km Coastal Route)
This will be the toughest day with a fair amount of portaging due to the terrain becoming quite rugged. The most dramatic scenery can be found along this stretch of coastline which makes the difficulty of this section most definitely worth while .
We head out from Mbotyi on the beach and portage over Sugar Loaf to the top of the escarpment where we ride along the cliffs high above the Indian Ocean until we reach Cathedral Rock were we will enjoy a break. We continue along the edge and drop down to get a view of Waterfall Bluff a 90m waterfall that plunges into the ocean below.
The route from here along the coast will take us passed Luphuthana, Goss Point & Port Grosvenor back to Vonnie’s Rest at Msikaba. We will have a special feast tonight with our wood oven pizza!
Vonnie’s Rest Msikaba to Wild Coast Casino 48km
Today needs to be timed perfectly with the tides and we head off on the single track path across the grasslands towards the Msikaba Estuary where we cross back into Mkambati Nature Reserve.
On the return journey we take an alternative route along the coast where we will get to sit and enjoy Mkambati Falls – another waterfall along this coast that plunges into ocean.
We continue on the game trails to the Northern edge of Mkambati where we will cross the Mtentu River (by ferry or wading, depending on the tide).
From Mtentu we climb up to the Pink Tavern where we have a traditional stop for an ice cold beer (or cold drink) with the locals before descending on to Sikombe Beach. 20km of deserted beaches with only the tracks of the bikes in front of you imprinted in the sand passing by the red desert and a few smaller river crossings before we reach our final destination – the Wild Coast Resort.
